British-Bangladeshi artist Rana Begum discusses form, color, and light and what drives her art practice. We visit her at her award-winning studio as she reflects on her favorite SALONI pieces.

How do you feel about fashion, and what is its resonance with your work?

I grew up in Bangladesh wearing vibrant colourful salwar kameez and sarees, which I believe had a significant influence on my work.  I love being surrounded by colour and the impact it has on how we look and feel.

My practice is very sensory-it focuses on how visual qualities and formal arrangements can evoke particular feelings. This is also what draws me to fashion. It’s about how texture, colour, and form can be manipulated to make you feel a certain way – whether it's strong, soft, elegant, provocative... I find this fascinating.

What drew you to the SALONI pieces you selected and wore for the shoot?

I love the texture, colours and bold prints. I love the skirt and jacket. I can see myself wearing them in different ways, becoming more formal or casual depending on what I wear them with, while the dresses were more elegant, offering a moment of glamour which made me feel great.

"Colour remains a central preoccupation in my work, particularly its relationship to form, movement, and light. The importance of movement and our physical relationship to form connects my interests in art, architecture, and fashion. In each discipline, I am attentive to how a body moves through and experiences space. I am interested in how form, colour, and texture can be usedto shape this experience, drawing attention to specific relationships and observing how they shift." - Rana Begum

How would you describe how you feel when you wear SALONI?

I love how it makes me feel - elegant and glamorous. I admire how Saloni uses colour, texture and material to create clothing that engages the senses and brings joy.

Where do you love to travel to get inspired?

Usually somewhere near water or the sea, where I can spend some time getting to know a place and people.

As well as light and colour, what other themes do you explore in your work?

I also love repetition and the idea of the infinite. The experience of rhythm and repetition allows me to feel calm, almost meditative.
