You know those sofas that mimic the peaks and troughs of a mountain range?

Yes, the same ones that blew up the internet not so long ago and then lined up the floors of MoMa San Francisco, Design Museum and Victoria & Albert in London. The makers of those sculptural pieces that define British avant-garde art, Patrik Fredrikson and Ian Stallard, gathered in the Saloni store on Sloane Street on February 4, 2020 for the designer’s spring/summer 2020 collection launch. Joined by Alex Meyers and art advisor Nazy Vassegh, the artists talked guests through their two iconic artworks: ‘The Hurricane’ and ‘Species V’. Hurricane, the light-reflecting, highly corrugated gold metallic sheets, we found, are not as straightforward as they seem.

The artists revealed the giant masses are manipulated by hand, fold by fold. This, then results in wave-like structures that project golden light onto the walls and ceilings with smoke like patterns that change over the course of the day. Sat on their ‘Species’ sofa that encapsulates the duo’s study in evolution through furniture design, the evening unfolded and guests got a glimpse of Saloni’s new collection set against the backdrop of Fredrikson Stallard creations. The common denominator between the two was evident in the artistic expression of the clothes and the sculptures. Both are led by the study of the natural world. Grounded in Indian jungle scenes that portray the relationship between forest and creature, Saloni Lodha described her collection as illustrations sprung from the pages of author Rudyard Kipling’s fables or the paintings of self-taught 19th century painter Henri Rousseau’s canvases. For Spring/ Summer 20, nature manifests in the form of batik techniques, tribal geometrics and organic motifs on a spring palette of shell pink, cornflower blue and sherbert lemon. There are scenes of leaping jungle monkeys, menageries and safaris in silhouettes that span classics like the midi dress, a new mini version, and even a take on tailoring. It’s a collection that embodies summer’s many adventures.

The spring/summer 2020 collection is now available in store and online.
