“Give a woman a fish and you feed her for a day; teach a woman to fish and you feed her for a lifetime.”

In India COVID-19 has devastated the livelihoods of daily wage labourers including waste pickers. Sadly, gender inequality in India means the situation for women and girls from these communities is even worse. They typically eat only leftover food after male family members have eaten first. When times are lean and rations low, women are especially hard hit.

To help solve this problem Chintan is training women from waste picker communities in Delhi to create micro kitchen-gardens in slum areas, giving them containers, seeds and compost to grow highly nutritious seasonal vegetables. The women are further supported with cooking classes. Over 1 year Chintan aims to help 2000 women and girls achieve better nutrition and health.
